Department Chair Leadership Development Program
Department Chairs play a critical role at Fordham because they are the liaison between their faculty and administrators. They connect their department’s objectives to the University’s mission.
Phase 1 of the inaugural Leadership Development Pilot Program, launched in late July, was a day and a half session designed to support and assist Department Chairs in managing crucial conversations, leading with a mission mindset, honing their positive influence skills, and networking with each other.
The process in developing this Program started with collecting data through a Needs Analysis that surveyed past and current Chairs, as well as Deans to determine the key competencies required for the Department Chair position. The results identified 15 core competencies (i.e., knowledge, skills, and abilities that are key to the Department Chair role) and were evaluated based on their level of importance.
This Program is a collaborative effort as a Working Committee was formed, meeting bi-weekly to analyze the data, share ideas and develop content for the session. The Working Committee members include Dr. Peggy Andover, Chair of Psychology, Dr. Sharif Mowlabocus, Chair of Communication and Media Studies, and Dr. Matthew Weinshenker, former Chair of Sociology and Anthropology.
The Working Committee played and will continue to play an integral role in this Program as Phase 2 and Phase 3 are developed.
